Voorafgaand aan het verrichten van de eerste dermatochirurgische ingrepen (onder supervisie) is het nodig om het hechten te beheersen (oefenen) en een aantal handboeken te bestuderen. In het Leerboek Dermatology van Bolognia staan een aantal hoofdstukken over dermatochirurgische ingrepen. Dit is een goede basis om mee te beginnen.

Verder zijn er een aantal dermatochirurgie handboeken (atlassen) met veel foto's van sluitingstechnieken en verschuivingsplastieken om door te bladeren:
